They say preparation is the key to success. At hap, we provide comprehensive training and dedicated support to prepare you for each of your roles. But it doesn’t hurt to do your bit, so that we can continue to run a tight ship.

With that in mind, here are our four top tips to help you hit the ground running on your first hospitality shift…

1. Dress smartly

Depending on the event or location you’re covering, you’ll have been notified of the dress code – usually a smart black shirt, black pants, and (you guessed it) black shoes. Wearing black means everyone is unified and identifiable. It also adds to the ninja effect of working in hospitality – you operate in the background, making the magic happen! Even better, black is less likely to show stains or spillages (which are bound to occur in the food and drink industry!) so you’ll look clean, tidy and professional throughout your shift.

2. Don’t forget your ID

There are a couple of reasons we ask you to bring your ID. Not only does it help us check that the person booked on the shift is actually the person working the shift, but since you’ll be serving alcohol, it allows us to confirm that you’re of the legal age to do so.

3. Check the PARiM notes

We use PARiM to keep everyone up to speed with what’s required of them on shift. On the PARiM platform, you’ll find information on shift times and meeting points, as well as any changes that may have been made. It’s always a good idea to log in and check your PARiM account before the start of every shift.

4. Remember to smile!

Ever heard the quote ‘you’re never fully dressed without a smile’? Nowhere is that more true than the hospitality industry – so be sure to bring your smile and your can-do attitude! The beauty of working in this sector is that you’re delivering an experience, and no two days are the same. Yes it’s your duty to be responsible on shift, but don’t be afraid to have fun, too!
