It’s no secret that bar, waiting on and supervisory staff often take the limelight when it comes to hospitality jobs. But at hap, there’s more to this industry than meets the eye. Every establishment, whether fixed or pop up, would be nothing without the people there to greet customers, clean up after them and keep the premises looking sharp.

Ready to explore the entire industry? Here, we highlight three hospitality opportunities you may not have known that hap can offer.

1. Front of house

Typically in restaurants, this role involves meeting, greeting and tending to the needs of incoming customers and existing guests. This can range from providing menus and cutlery to taking bookings and offering advice on the local area. Placements can range from strictly host-related to more hands-on responsibilities like table clearing and food delivery.

You’ll need to scrub up well, have a good phone manner, and show a natural ability to serve and communicate with customers. You’ll most likely be required to dip your toes into each corner of the business, so it’s a great segue into learning new skills and building up your knowledge of how a hospitality venue works.

2. Kitchen porter

If you’ve got a knack for kitchen cleanliness then the role of kitchen porter (KP) could be for you. Typical duties include washing up, clearing, cleaning and maintaining utensil levels for hospitality kitchens and their chefs. This also includes bin emptying, deep cleaning and general maintenance of your work area.

You’ll need to have a basic understanding of manual handling (lifting and carrying heavy or large loads), a good work ethic, and an ability to efficiently execute the task at hand. Much like front of house, you’ll be right in amongst the varying roles around you, potentially providing windows of opportunities into other areas such as cheffing. Some more advanced roles may even encompass basic food preparation to begin with.

3. Housekeeping

Do you have an eye for detail, an urge to be thorough, and the cleaning skills to go with it? Housekeeping roles require you to do all three quickly and effectively. You’ll usually find these opportunities popping up in hotel venues or any hospitality space that needs consistent cleaning and maintenance of multiple spaces.

You’ll have a direct responsibility for the aesthetic and physical experience that guests have of the venue. As a result, your employer’s reputation is in your hands. This makes the role of a housekeeper extremely valued and often highly rewarding.
