What two things do transport, tents, and drinks have in common? One: festivals can’t do without them. And two: they’re massive carbon footprint culprits.
Now, we’re not suggesting you walk to the fields, sleep on the floor, or go thirsty. But there are plenty of simple things you can do to reduce your environmental impact this summer. And with thousands of staff members across over 100 festivals, a small effort from everyone means a massive win for the planet. Let’s talk you through it…
It pays to recycle
In years gone by, being kind to the environment was a bit of an afterthought – something people did either when they had the time, or as a box-ticking exercise. But now that world leaders are putting global warming centre stage, you know it must be serious.
The planet is suffering, and if that’s not enough to convince you to go green this festival season, what if we said you could save a bunch of money too? Recycling doesn’t just mean separating your rubbish – it’s also about reusing things, instead of forking out for new items again and again.Â
We’re not asking for the earth (no pun intended) – just a few easily adoptable habits will do the trick. And we’ve no doubt that many of you will already be doing them!
It’s easy being green
Most festivals are pretty eco-conscious these days, with many of them running their own initiatives to lower their carbon footprint. But to get you started, we’ve put together a list of our four top tips to help you be more environmentally friendly this festival season:
- Clean up and recycle
Take a bin bag or grab one from the nearest bar to set up in your camp, and use the recycle bins around the site. Clean camp, clean planet – it’s a win win!
- Reuse a tent, then take it home
Don’t have your own? Ask a mate, ask your mum – there’s always someone with a tent to spare. This way, you’re more likely to take it with you when you’re done, instead of leaving it for landfill.
- Bring your own refill bottle
Vacuum flasks are all the rage these days. They keep your brew hot and your bevvy cool. It’s like they were made for festivals… Other multi-use cups and bottles are also great!
- Travel with company
Thinking of driving solo to the event? Think again! You can save petrol by hopping on the staff coach, car sharing, or jumping on the train – you’ll have a much better time too!
Be sure to check out the website of the event you’re working at to see what else you can do to lower your carbon footprint. And while you’re at it, share your efforts – including any new suggestions – using the #hapstaff tag and start a mexican wave with your network.
